Big League is brewed with a blend of Cascade, Simcoe. The brewers at Harpoon took the same hazy pale ale recipe, and multiplied everything by two. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends. Harpoon Brewery’s newest year-round offering, Harpoon Big League IPA, is a full-flavored version of its lighter, sessionable cousin Harpoon Rec.
Though many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, much has stayed the same. It was hard to imagine that craft brewing would become what it has today. Fresh, local craft beer began making its way out to Boston beer drinkers. In June of 1987 a warehouse space on the Boston waterfront was transformed into a brewery and the first Harpoon Ale was brewed. They decided to build a brewery so that they could brew the beers that they wanted to drink, and invite their friends to the brewery to drink it with them. While most beer options back then were mass-produced pale lagers, Harpoon IPA was the first craft beer on the East Coast to put hops at the forefront. There were some great IPAs out in the Pacific Northwest, but no local IPAs. Harpoon IPA was originally brewed in 1993 and was the first IPA brewed in New England during America’s craft beer revival earning it the nickname of New England’s Original IPA. Traveling through Europe and experiencing the rich traditions of European brewing and beer drinking enhanced their love of beer and opened their eyes to the rich beer culture they wanted back home. HARPOON IPA 12PK CAN We started brewing this beer as a summer seasonal in 1993. They were three friends who loved beer and loved drinking beer together but found the beer choices at the time to be limited. Harpoon was started in 1986 by Dan Kenary, Rich Doyle, and George Ligeti.
